The Finnish phone manufacturing company has been working on a low-cost Android smartphone device that is codenamed “Normandy”. The device will have a design that is very similar to Nokia's low-end Asha range. But the device will also have the capability to support some Android applications.
It will be an actual Nokia handset in the Android platform, something that many Android fans will be looking forward to seeing. Even though there are not many details on the Android part of the device, it is reported that the device will run an Android variant that is not in line with what you get from Google.
When compared to other such devices, it is a truly unique offering, just like what is found on the Kindle Fire tablets. Reportedly, applications like Skype and some other big-name and oft-downloaded apps will be able to run on this device.
However, Microsoft has received full approval to purchase Nokia from its shareholders and various regulators. Although it yet to be seen how this will play out with the Microsoft deal, which was just given the go-ahead by the European Union.
According to rumors, the employees of Nokia were targeting a 2014 release date for Normandy. They had described the project as "full steam ahead", in spite of the recent acquisition of Nokia's Devices and Services division by Microsoft.
Nokia has appeared to go the Amazon way, but the device will apparently run a number of Android applications. There will be a lot to speculate, in regard to the way people will react to the release, and how it will affect the smartphone market. Only time can tell, from this point on.
