At some point of time, all of us have gone through iOS vs. Android debates at length. The markets are flooded with smartphones, and this is the discussion that precedes every purchase. Here’s my take on the debate and why I personally feel the iphone or the ipad is a better buy.
There is a group of people who would say your iOS device is not worth the money unless you jailbreak it; however, I still prefer the iOS as it is and here’s why:
• Limited choice, no Confusion and Amazing Uniformity
Take the Apple iPhone, iPad or the Mac you would be able to, happily work across these platforms without any hiccups. You can switch between them too and would still be able to enjoy the same freedom. Apple uses several programs that are similar and incorporates the same design elements across all their devices, giving users a unified experience. This way you can work on any of their devices without having to reorient yourself every time you switch a device. Also, Apple does not have many products for you to choose from and their products are quite similar, so there’s less to choose from, and hence it’s less confusing.
Take the Android phones; there are several of these devices and each of them running on different versions of the Operating Systems. This makes it difficult for you to work seamlessly across devices and is also quite trying when you have to pick a device.
• Versions and software updates
Like I said before; there are several operating systems for Android like the Jelly Bean, Ice cream sandwich, Gingerbread etc. To know the version of each device and work accordingly is tiresome. As for developing apps, developers have a lot of groundwork to do before they can make their apps compatible with the various versions.
Apple basically has its versions easily compatible with each other so an app designed for iOS6 would work easily on versions 5 and 7. It is true that certain features like the Siri or the AirDrop requires version 4S and above, but again they are just incentives to buy the new version and does not cripple you technologically.
Now fewer devices make version updates easier to handle and coordinate. Apple has an upgrade hit on even the 3GS device which is now quite old. Lesser number of devices; be it the iPad the iphone or the ipod and better control on them make it easier for Apple. Android devices, on the other hand, are too many for even the company making them to track, and so they are often forgotten as the cost of providing free updates is quite prohibiting especially for companies that launch more than 10 devices a year.
• Lots of Apps to choose from and no custom interface to bother about
It’s a known fact that most developer, enterprises and business owners prefer to design and develop apps that run on idevices rather than the Android ones. This can be attributed to the aesthetic design and beautiful machines that they are. Most third party apps prefer to stay with Apple as it’s easier to upgrade their apps and they also have the advantage of seeing their apps function beautifully on these sleek and fashionable devices.
As for custom interfaces, Android devices are sure to come with one like the Motorola MotoBlur or the Samsung TouchWiz which tend to slow down the upgrade process as it spells more work for developers and may also bloat up and occupy too much space on your device. Whereas Apple strictly has no other carrier installed software with a any of its devices.
• Multiple other reasons
Besides the above reasons, iOS devices have better battery life, more interesting features like the Siri, AirDrop, FaceTime (built-in video talking), etc. Also, these devices come with solid and sturdy hardware that are not easily outdated.
To sum up, I would definitely vouch for any of the iOS devices like the iphone or the ipad or even the ipod over any of the other devices available in the markets today.
So that’s my idea on the better of the devices, feel free to share your views and comments below.
