What seemed to be an undisputed deal between the tech giants Nokia and Microsoft is now facing the heat from the Nokia employees in China. Hundreds or workers came out protesting outside the Nokia’s production plant in Dongguan, China. Workers are protesting against the $7.3 billion deal between Nokia and Microsoft, which they consider unfair on the employees’ part.
The workers protested claiming that we are fighting the unethical new contracts those have been offered to them after the deal in September. One of the protesters named Zhang (second name) said, “We will definitely continue to fight until we get what’s fair.”
The protest also resulted in a riot where police beat up four workers on Wednesday morning. Nokia mentioned in the email that we are negotiating with the protesters and will come up with plausible solutions.
More than 30 police officers were deployed on the scene to take control of the situation and keep a watch on workers clad in white Nokia uniforms. The protesters held banners with slogans like “Demand fair compensation” and “Legally protect our rights.”
Nokia officials said, “Our manufacturing operations in Dongguan continue.” To accommodate the temporary situation, we have adjusted our operation in other manufacturing facilities.’’ The protesters outside the Nokia facility claimed that they have not heard anything from the management. They will continue to protest until they are being heard and their demands for fair employment terms are addressed.
It would be interesting to see how the company tackles this situation. On one hand, Nokia has shook hands with Microsoft Corp to regain the lost mobile market; on the other hand, it is now being taken aback from the protesters.
