One of the very few criticisms the Android market faced was that people don't spend money on apps there. However, new reports from Analytics Firm App Annie and research firm IDC claims that Google Play generated more revenue on games in the second quarter of this year, overtaking Sony’s and Nintendo gaming handhelds combined.
It’s a far cry from the inaugural report in February this year, which put revenue from handled consoles above Android and iOS though when combined, the revenue from both the mobile platforms was higher. Apple’s platform went on to surpass the efforts from handheld devices, and now Android has followed in its footsteps.
Data from elsewhere indicates the fast growing rate of the Google Play Store. Research from the analytics company, Distimo, recently estimated that as compared to 15% for app revenues in the iOS platform, revenue gained by Google Play apps had grown 67% between February and June 2013. The American Search Engine giant has also been tipped to launch its own brand of console games running in the Android platform.
Judging from the latest report from App Annie and IDC, it is clear that the dedicated console market is slowly deteriorating. The report suggests that the Android’s gaming position surpassed the joint efforts of Sony’s Vita and PSP, and Nintendo’s 3DS, DS and DSi in the second quarter of 2013.In addition, the report also found that Sony and Nintendo made small gains in Western Europe while Android and iOS share of game revenue jumped in Asia-Pacific.
Ultimately, the news is bleak for companies like Nintendo and Sony as they are trying to claw themselves back into the dedicated console industry. The trend is clearer with each quarter that people these days want to play top notch games on their Android or iOS powered smartphone devices and tablets.
